How did you first get interested in technology?
To be honest, I’ve always loved computers but I wouldn’t say I “choose” my major in college. It was chosen for me by an influential family member. After the first semester or so, I really started to enjoy it. It wasn’t love at first sight but I did eventually (fairly quickly) fall in love with it. One of my professors had us create “fun” sites using PERL (his approach to entice us) which made it FUN and INTERESTING!
What do you do at work?
I work in the loyalty discipline of Marketing agency. I do everything from ETL processing to site maintenance to reporting stats and analytics. I also provide on call support monitoring web and database servers. My favorite part is working with data at a large scale.
How have you increased your skill set over the years, formally or otherwise?
I have taken a certificate course on Administering SQL, .NET and attended conferences and events. I get the most from just talking to like-minded folks, getting an interest sparked, that then makes me come back to do further research of my own. I find that works best for me.
If you could do something else, what would it be?
If I could do anything else and had the financial backing, it would be creating an animal sanctuary and surround myself with lots of furry members! My love for animals goes way back…perhaps even as early has birth. I think I’m just hard wired that way. 🙂
Have you ever considered starting your own venture?
Yes, who hasn’t?! BUT I haven’t come across an idea that I could really sink my teeth into. I’m open to the possibility. I realize the key will be being passionate about something and not just doing it for the money.
What is the best career advice you have ever gotten?
You’re only ONE person, just do the best you can and try it make sure it is YOUR best!
